How A Believing Wife Makes The Gospel More Attractive To Her Husband

The Bible tells us that a believing wife can make the gospel more attractive to her husband. It would be ideal if every relationship had two believers on the same page in their beliefs, but that doesn’t always happen.

In fact, teaching women for the past eighteen years, many women shared their struggles with husbands who don’t believe at all and some who claim Christianity, but their actions lack the conviction toward our Christian faith. These lop-sided values and beliefs create a strain on marriages.

However, the gospel we believe always brings good news.

Scripture tells us that even with unequal beliefs the believer’s sanctification actually overrides the unsanctified status of the unbelieving spouse.

For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife,

and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband;

otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy.

1 Corinthians 7:14

Your belief will, is, and does, affect your husband’s spiritual status. In other words, your faith is powerful!

Now let’s go beyond the supernatural imposed spiritual covering your belief gives your husband and children and talk practically.

Practical Ways A Believing Wife Can Make The Gospel More Attractive To Her Husband.

1)    Live out our faith with holy boldness and humility in front of our husbands.

Our husbands need to see what we believe and how much we believe.  Matthew 5:16 records Jesus saying, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

So, we boldly shine the light given to us, yet we also live out our faith with humility. What we display and offer is a relationship with a living and loving God. Living out our faith requires a delicate balance between boldness and humility, and balancing the two requires abiding and submitting to the Word of God and the Holy Spirit.

2)    Pray continually and confidently for our husbands.

The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man (or woman) avails much.

James 5:16b

Prayer works! Prayer matters for us to know how to balance between boldness and humility in living out our faith. Continual and confident prayer also affects change in our husbands. And our confidence comes from our faith deeply rooted in the truth of God’s word.

1 John 5:14-15 says, “Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.”

Did you notice the bolded underlined words in 1 John 5:14-15? Those words are our power in prayer! Praying according to God’s will assures us of positively answered prayer, and we know God’s will by knowing His word.

3)    Love our husbands and don’t try to change them.

The last two weeks I focused on loving our husbands and identified ways we can do a better job of loving them. If you haven’t read the past two blog posts, I recommend taking a few minutes to do that, because loving our husband is our primary role as a wife.

Here are the past 2 blog posts about marriage:

Biblical Marriage, Loving Our Husbands, And Lessons I Learned Along The Way

Learn How To Love Our Husbands Through Gratitude And Respect

As I talked about the past two weeks, our husbands are different, and what speaks to them as love may not be the same for us.

Remember dear sister in Christ that changing our husband is not our job. That job belongs to the Holy Spirit. If we live by the first two points that we already discussed and the last two that we are about to discuss, we will not need to concern ourselves with changing our husbands. God will do the work for us!

4)    Trust God fully and stay in peace.

Trust is a deeply rooted belief in the ability and reliability of God. Trust and peace go hand in hand.

Trusting God means believing in His ability and reliability even when our life or circumstances seem anything but good. When the very thing we have been praying not to happen, happens, we need to dive into the depths of trusting God. When we live out our faith and pray in faith, and days turn to weeks, weeks to months, and yes, sometimes months to years, we dive deeper. Step deeper into God’s presence and His word relying fully on the truth and effect of His word as we see in Exodus 14:14 and Isaiah 26:3.

The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace."

Exodus 14:14

You will keep him in perfect peace,

whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.

Isaiah 26:3

  • Use these two verses in your prayers to help deepen your trust in God and maintain your peace.

5)    Wait Patiently. Believe. Speak. And Expect.

How do you feel about the word, wait? Personally, I never liked it. I once understood wait as inaction and I don’t like inaction either. However, when it comes to my faith journey, I have learned that waiting on God to work in my life, or waiting in faith, doesn’t necessarily mean a state of nothingness.

Of course, at times God calls us to be still and know that He is God (Psalm 46:10). Sometimes He calls us to Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord. (2 Chronicles 20:17) I believe that in those times, God doesn’t want us to miss what He’s doing, or maybe He wants to make sure that we know, He’s the one who did the work.

Other times, like those times when our prayers seem unanswered for way too long, God is doing a work of deeper faith in us. However, I truly believe that wait on the Lord, is active. We wait because we believe, and we speak what we believe.

And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written,

"I believed and therefore I spoke," we also believe and therefore speak.

2 Corinthians 4:13

And we expect because we are fully convinced that what God promised He is able to perform (Romans 4:21).
