11 Bible Verses For When You Find Yourself Alone And In The Wilderness

Alone and In The Wilderness

Have you ever experienced a time in your life when you may have felt alone, unseen, or unheard? It’s so easy to feel discouraged in moments or seasons like this. It’s a place you may also know as the wilderness.  The wilderness can be a place of solitude, fear, trial, and uncertainty, but also the very place that God wants to meet us.

One girl in particular who experienced the wilderness that we read about in God’s word is Hagar, the lowly servant girl to Sarah and Abraham. Hagar has never been one of those women in the Bible that has stood out to me, but her story is valuable and gives us hope. Although Hagar was mistreated, used, and abandoned, the one thing I feel we can relate to, is her feeling unseen.

I can’t imagine being treated the way Hagar was treated. We see in Genesis 16 that Sarah used Hagar in hopes to provide a family for her and Abraham because she believed God went back on His promise of providing her a child. Taking the matter into her own hands because God wasn’t acting fast enough, sound familiar?

When Hagar got pregnant, we see that she may have rubbed it in Sarah’s face a little according to verse 4 which says, “when she saw that she conceived, she looked with contempt on her mistress.” Of course, this made Sarah angry and Scripture tells us that she dealt harshly with Hagar causing her to flee into the wilderness. At this point, I’m sure Hagar felt anger, hatred, loneliness, confusion, bitterness, and fear. There she is, stranded in the desert, pregnant and alone. I can’t imagine.

Found in the Wilderness

There have been times in my life where I have felt completely alone like God had abandoned me. It’s easy to want to run away from our problems or flee like Hagar did when things get too difficult, but it’s times like these when God may be closer than you think. It was there in the wilderness where God found Hagar. Verse 7 says, “The angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness.”

Notice I bolded the word “found” because it’s not like God actually needs to seek and find us. But, He knows exactly where we are. Although God was faithful to Abraham & Sarah who seemed like the “stars” of this whole entire story, God met the lowly servant girl who seemed so insignificant. And He actually tells Hagar that He will protect her.  Furthermore, God blessed her. Genesis16:13, says, “You are a God of seeing, for she said Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.”

There is so much more to Hagar’s story from God telling her to go back to the place where she was mistreated, to getting shunned back into the wilderness with her son, from feeling hopeless once again, to God fulfilling His promise to Hagar and blessing her. You see, throughout history, God used bad situations for his glory and continues to do so today. God’s plan doesn’t always look the way we hope, but that’s where faith comes in. Sometimes we have to endure the wilderness in order to see God’s glory on the other side of it.

Practical Encouragement

If you are experiencing the wilderness right now where you are, I encourage you to pray and ask God what it is He wants to show you. You may have to walk through the wilderness a little longer before you know what that answer is. There is always something to be learned when walking through a drought, storm, or wilderness. The wilderness isn’t always a bad place, but can be a place of growth. One thing is certain, God hears and sees you right where you are!

Here are 11 Bible Verses to meditate on and pray over yourself when you find yourself in a wilderness where you feel alone, unseen, and unheard. As you read through each verse, take them personal, as a spoken word to you from your heavenly Father because Your God is personal, and desires deep intimate relationship with you.
