God Gave Us The Bible To Be A Light In The Dark

A light in the dark is like a drink of cool water to someone who has worked outside all day in the blazing heat of summer. Light entering darkness soothes and calms us. It helps us know we are going to make it and everything is going to be okay. The world in which we live is getting darker. If you haven’t noticed, turn on the news or look on social media for a brief moment to see the darkness thickening.

I imagine my assessment of the dark times we live in has not escaped you. However…

God gave us a light in the dark!

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Psalm 119:105

Have you ever stumped your toe getting out of the bed in the middle of the night? I have.

When I was a little girl, I hated the dark and feared what lurked in the darkness. I remember one night when I was a little girl getting out of my bed in the middle of the night. It was so dark that I face-planted a wall while searching for a light in the dark.

While I have never liked the dark I am not so afraid now as I was when I was young. However, I still keep nightlights on all over my house. I sleep much better with a light in the dark. If I get up in the middle of the night, a nightlight makes me comfortable because I can see how to get around without bodily injury!

I know the benefit of a light in the dark!

A light in the dark keeps me from making a wrong step and hurting myself.

God’s word is the same for us spiritually. He gave us the Bible, i.e. His Word, to be a light in this dark world. His word illuminates our daily path in life helping us to avoid things that trip us up or cause us pain. Some call the Bible a history book or describe it as outdated and irrelevant. I say, God’s Word is practical, personal, and beneficial.

His word shines light and benefits those who love and look to it for help and guidance in living life.

Notice the benefits of God’s word in these verses:

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine,

for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

2 Timothy 3:16

His word is living and powerful.

Hebrews 4:12

For the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light;

reproofs of instruction are the way of life.

Proverbs 6:23

We need the benefits of God’s word as a light in the dark world in which we live. Have you experienced the enlightening power of God’s word? Do you want to? Do you wish you wanted to? Ask God to give you a passion and a hunger for His word. He will not deny you. It is His desire that you know Him through His word.
