Sixteen Benefits of God’s Word based on Psalm 119

Sixteen Benefits of God’s Word based on Psalm 119

Psalm 119 focuses on the benefits of God’s Word. While Psalm 119 is the longest Psalm, it makes up a tiny portion of the entirety of God’s word. However, I find it interesting that Psalm 119 is placed at the center of the Bible. The benefits of His word seem to be set as the heart and soul of the Bible.

Last week in my blog post, God Gave Us the Bible To Be A Light In the Dark, I challenged those willing to take the challenge to read, study, mediate on Psalm 119 searching for the benefits of God’s word. If you didn’t take the challenge then, it’s not too late now!

I found sixteen benefits of God’s Word in my study of the passage. Here they are:

16 Benefits of God’s word according to Psalm 119

God’s Word:

  • Cleanses our way

  • keeps us from sinning against God

  • Revives us

  • Strengthens us

  • Brings mercy to us

  • Brings salvation to us

  • Causes us to hope

  • Gives us life

  • Comforts us

  • Tastes sweet like honey

  • Upholds us

  • Gives light

  • Gives understanding

  • Directs our steps

  • Causes rejoicing

  • Delivers us

I only listed the benefits directly linked to the term word(s) in Psalm 119. If we expand our study beyond the term, word(s), to other terms related or corresponding to God’s word, we discover many more benefits than sixteen.

Other Terms Related Or Corresponding To God’s Word:

  • precepts, statutes, commandments, judgments, testimonies, law, and ordinances.

The psalmist used each one of those words to express how he treasured the benefits of God and His word. The psalmist, David wrote Psalm 119, as well as, Psalm 103 where he talked about the benefits of God.

Bless the Lord, O my soul and forget not all His benefits.

Psalm 103:2

David followed that statement with a barrage of benefits. The American Heritage College Dictionary defines benefits as something that promotes or enhances well being; an advantage. David named those benefits: forgiveness, healing, redemption, loving-kindness, satisfaction, renewal, mercy, grace . . . From a similar understanding, the apostle John wrote:

And there are also many other things that Jesus did,

which if they were written one by one,

I suppose that even the world itself

could not contain the books that were written.

John 21:25

There is not enough paper in the world to list all the benefits of God.

God has done great things. He does great things. He will do great things. That is incredible! Have you realized His benefits lately? Sometimes we get wrapped up in our everyday stuff and forget that our God is loaded with benefits.

Dear Heavenly Daddy,

Thank You for Your benefits. Forgive me for getting wrapped up in the things of life and forgetting to look to You for Your benefits. I realize salvation is the greatest benefit of knowing You. Help me to see and experience Your benefits. In Jesus name I pray. Amen!

Take a minute to list a few of the benefits of God you have experienced in your life. What about the Lord has promoted or enhanced your well being? What advantages do you have because Jesus is in your heart and life? Keep them listed in a place where you can see them and thank Him daily. As He reveals a new benefit, add it to your list and do as David did – BLESS THE LORD!
